Grammarian

Grammarian

The Grammarian has an important and difficult job, that of challenging members to increase their vocabulary with a new Word of the Day. The Grammarian must also listen intently throughout the meeting for uses of the word of the day, and other exceptional or questionable uses of the English language.

Before the Meeting

  • Select a Word of the Day that ties in with the theme of the meeting
  • Find a suitable definition
  • Write the word, part of speech, definition, and sample sentence on the white board

During the Meeting

  • At the request of the Toastmaster, explain the purpose and function of Grammarian and present the “Word of the Day” by giving a definition, correct spelling, and possible uses of the word in a sentence.
  • At the conclusion of Table Topics, list the names of participants who used the “Word of the Day” in their answers to the Table Topics questions.
  • When invited to do so by the General Evaluator, give a report about courageous and excellent uses of English, as well as areas where members practice or improve.
  • Listen for: proper and misuse of words; correct and incorrect pronunciation; clichés and over-used phrases or words; excellent or improper sentence structure; excellent use of language
